colour with black...or is it?

An art tutor (long time ago) told me never to use black... I do use black, either straight as in charcoal or I mix my own using dark colours together.....but the age old question; is black a colour?...hehehe maybe no one cares, it does make colours appear more luminous though.

    Thanks David, the top painting is Awareness, mixed media on linen,48x42 inches, the other is mixed media approx 24x24 inches :-)
